BACKGROUND

The Dominican people are normally gentle and loving people. However when it comes to animals, it can be a very different matter.

Horses here are still used for agriculture and transportation . Often they carr mutch to  heavy loads with unsuitable saddles resulting in hideous wounds. In short, they are often worked to death.

Once the parasites take hold of a weak horse, he has not long to live.

WHAT WE TRY TO DO

Karin and Ronald graze their horses in common lands around Las Galeras and too often see horses that will certainly die if they receive no attention.

They take these horses to La Rancheta and give them medicine for their wounds, clean them of parasites and feed them until they are strong enough to have some hope to survive on their own.

PLACEMENT WITH LOCAL FAMILIES

Karin knows the Dominican people in her area that will treat horses properly. When possible she will give the horse to the family and keep a close eye to ensure the horse is well tended.

But there are many more horses in need then there are good re homing opportunities.

HOW BIG IS THE PROBLEM

Karin and Ron do what they can for the horses. But the need is overwhelming.
In just the first three months of 2008 they saved four horses from almost certain death. They have to choose to take on only the most hopeless cases.

It is a big problem and we realises we needs to seek outside assistance to continue the effort.

Rosa

Unbelieveble, Rosa survived this! Oktober 2008.

IT IS NOT ONLY A DOMINICAN ISSUE

Abanded animals are always an issue in the DR. For poor uneducated Dominicans, one can come to understand it.
What is less forgivable is the foreigners who come to the DR for part of the year and abandon their cats and dogs when they go home.
Those animals can't survive on der own, bring dog and cat food and help them and homeless streetdogs also to survive.

FEED A DOG OR A CAT AT A LOCAL FAMILY

There are many familys with dogs and cats but no money to feed them, if you help us to buy dog and cat food you will help these animals to have a better live.

On the picture: -Ronald with "Zipke" she found a home in Haiti with a french couple.

-"Perla negra" went to Belgium with a young couple and is a beautiful dog now.

-"Tosca" stayed with us (found on the street Oct.2008)
